The thing i have enjoyed this year...

The thing I enjoyed most in room 5 is ... Athletics Day

On a Friday our school (Broadgreen) had athletics day.

Firstly, the school sat on the field in the scorching hot sun. Hats and sunscreen was worn and whenever you had a chance you would sit in the shade for a moment of placid, cool relaxation. But also at the same time watching our peers trying their hardest to get a great score for their points card.

Secondly, I was with my group watching the swift movements of people sprinting past. The expression on their faces, the concentration makes you contemplate who is going to win? Group by group people were having their moment to shine and compete against others. It came up to my turn and I stood their waiting, waiting for that clapping ring in your ears for your body to instantly get into action.

Thirdly, at the end of the day everyone was drained. All the energy lost and replaced with exhaustion. I contemplated to myself, what a good day.

Dead Fly Art

Just for fun this week, I asked the kids who wanted to work with some dead flies to produce art work - surprisingly there were quite a few who felt the need to express themselves...a few of the results are above, the rest can be viewed on the right.

VERY funny and some great thought went in to producing these

dragon news by Samara

have you heard about the dragon that dark, waiting for the children on their way home from school? what are you going to do about it?

On the night of the full moon a young dragon was flying around. He was flying quiet low. well a lot than he usually did. All of the dragons drunk moonlight. And it was moonlight that enabled them to fly. Tonight the full moon was giving them lots of energy and enabling them to fly a lot better than usual. Suddenly the sky went pitch black as a large flock of black birds flew across the sky. The young dragon instantly lost the power to fly. And try as he might, he couldn't stop him self from plummeting to the ground. He desperately looked round for a place to land. He saw a flat clear place to land and aimed for it minutes later he crashed to the ground. Luckily it was around 1pm on a Tuesday night. So nobody heard him land.

Wednesday morning there where rumors that there was a monster in the park that ate naughty children. Wednesday afternoon the rumors even more exaggerated. So now there was a 100m monster in the park. That ate 25 children, 20 cow, 15 sheep, 10 chickens and 5 pigs for breakfast, lunch and tea. He was covered in red armour that no weapon could break. And a breath of bright yellow fire, could kill you.

I decided to have a look my self to see if it was true.

After school I ran to the old brick gates and crept inside. I sprinted down the gravel path with different types of trees on each side.

Finally I came to a clearing and curled up in the corner was a silver dragon. He awoke with a start when he saw me and looked at me warily. I walked up to him cautiously.

Suddenly he started speaking a different language and the strange thing was that i could understand it. He told me about him self and how he go here. He also told me where he lived. He told me about the moon mountains where the dragons live, the cliffs where the griffons and pheonixs live, the forest where the elves, brownies, centaur, fauns, anomagus and lots of other magical creatures live. "I wish I could go there with you" I exclaimed "Well maybe you could" the young dragon replied.

"Apparently if dragons fall down from our land, to get back they must carry a human boy and a brownie girl" the young dragon mumbled.

Suddenly there was a rustling from the bush and two cat eyes peered through the leaves. The cat eyes were bright green. The bushes parted to reveal a young brownie girl she had 4 arms and dark brown fur. She said her name was Sorrel "Blooming death caps!" explained Sorrel
"Look!!" I looked and saw what she was talking

My first few days at Broadgreen Intermedaite School...

Hello everyone,
I'm Maike Wakelin - Eckoldt and I'm going to tell you all about my first few weeks at Broad Green.

I have moved from Nelson Intermediate school. I was there for about four or more months. But now I have started Broad Green Intermediate. The experience has just been fantastic. Everyone has been so inviting and caring towards me as a new student and helping me out with the changes.

The teachers at Broad Green are very skilled in my opinion, I feel like I am learning so much already in Maths and english etc. Plus the fun attitude in the teachers towards the students is great. The class I have moved into is good. Room 5 students are fun and enjoyable to be around. It was funny to find that when I moved in there were 10 chickens! I sort of thought it was a bit odd! But then I realized it was a great way for us students to learn about caring and looking after pets properly.

As for friends that has not been a problem at all! The other students at this school are so open, fun and caring. They have been helping me by showing me around school, showing what everyone does at lunches and intervals but most of all being friendly! =)

When I first came the Christchurch South School was visiting for a while. But then the second week I was here they had left. There was a cool performance from Christchurch South School that was enjoyable to watch.

I have already made great connections with people and awesome friendships.

I'm glad that I get to spend my several weeks left of Intermediate at Broad Green before I move onto college. =)

Reading to the Kindy Kids

We have been so busy of late with the new arrivals. We wanted to integrate this fantastic experience with the local Kindy which backs onto our school.

Room 5 were placed into 5 separate groups and each one had to come up with an adventure for the chicks. These were then made into books and 5 kids from the class who can find reading challenging were chosen to read the stories to the children at Kindy.

Cameron, Wati, James, Becky and Rhys did an awesome job reading - well done guys!!!

Incubating Eggs - part 2!!!

In week four, twelve eggs were laid at at Phil Gibbs farm in Bright water. He then kindly gave them to room five. He gave them to us for free as long as he got all them all the chicks back when they hatched.

On Wednesday in week five, Mrs Parker brought the eggs into the classroom then 'set' the eggs. This means placing them in an incubator and keeping the temperature around 29 degrees. We also put water in a little well in the center of the incubator to keep it humid.

Over the next 18 days everyone took turns turning the eggs. The eggs had to be turned because usually a mother hen would turn her eggs each day. We also had to check that inside the incubator stayed about 28-29 degrees.

On tuesday in week 8, a small crack appeared on the top of one of the eggs! When we came back from maths there was a tiny wet baby chicken tottering around the incubator. After lunch we came back and saw an egg moving. Everyone crowded around as the little chick slowly cracked open the eggshell. Two more hatched that day and another 2 hatched overnight.

We called these chickens Gertrude,Yolk,Pie,Noodles, Silas and Zinger Ginger.
When they had dried off we put them in a box with a heat lamp hanging over it.

One more hatched on Wednesday and 2 hatched on Wednesday night.

It took 24 hours for the last one to hatch because it's membrane had become very hard when we opened the incubator and some humidity had escaped. Mrs Parker had to help this chick to hatch. She decided to name it after the irish warrior Cachullan because of its long struggle.

Overall, ten of the twelve fertilized eggs hatched which is a lot because it's good if even 60% hatch!!!

Talking to Lidi in Chile

Our classmate Lidi is visiting relatives in Chile right now. We hooked up with her this morning on skype to see how she was getting on. We also found out some great facts about the country...

Chile

Population of Chile: 16,454,143.
Population of New Zealand: 4,173,460.

The area of chile: 756,495. sq.km.
The area of New Zealand: 268,021. sq.km.

The population of Chile is four times the size of New Zealand chile stretches about 4,300 km along the south west coast of South America. In New Zealand we are a day ahead of chile so if it is Wednesday in New zealand it would be Tuesday in chile. The time in Chile is sixteen hours behind New Zealand. The country its self is almost four times the size of New Zealand.

There are attractions ranging from the towering volcano peaks of the Andes to the ancient forest of the lake district attracts many people. Chile is a long strip down the south west side of America.

Totara Blessing B.I.S

This morning Broadgreen held a blessing for the totara carving that Matua Mark made for our hall. In preparation we went to room 4 to practice the schedule and the song (Ko toku Maraie tenei). We then left to meet outside the front entrance to the hall were we were gathering.

The blessing was led by one of our kapa haka leaders as she called us in with a karanga then there were speeches and singing. We were then all asked to pass under the carving and place our hands on it if we were tall enough to reach it. We now have a beautiful new carving leading into our school.

Incubating Eggs

Today we got some eggs from Mrs Parkers Friend Phil - he generously donated 12 fertile eggs to our class. We are hoping some will hatch and are really excited.

We have to roll them over each morning and afternoon and make sure our hands are warm before doing this as it could chill the eggs. The eggs have numbers written on them in pencil. On one side is a 1 and on the other side is a 2. The numbering stops any confusion when rolling them over. We will have to turn them by ourselves for the first 18 days. They take 21 days to hatch out. Since we put them in on a Wednesday, they should hatch on a Wenesday.

There is a little well in the middle of the incubator that we have to fill with water as this keeps the incubator humid. The temperature is between 38 and 40 degrees C in the incubator so its pretty hot!

The incubator has a circumference of approximately 40cm and it is approximately 10cm high. We have placed a card board box over the top of the incubator so to keep the air temperature around the incubator relatively stable.

Need Some Inspiration....?

This amazing video was sent to me today by a fellow teacher. I then put it up on the big screen for Room 5 to view it - what a reaction...absolute stunned silence. Read the article below first and then click the youtube link.
The Story

A son asked his father, 'Dad, will you take part in a marathon with me?'
The father who, despite having a heart condition said 'yes.' They went on to complete the marathon together.

Father and son went on to join other marathons, the father always saying'yes' to his son's request of going through the race together.

One day, the son asked his father, 'Dad, let's join the Ironman together.' To which, his father said 'yes' too.

For those who don't know, the Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometers)
ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometers) bike ride, and
ending with a 26.2 mile (42...195 kilometers) marathon along the coast of the Big Island .

The father and son went on to complete the race together.

What really happened in the story Little Red Riding Hood?

Granny was a great neighbour of mine. I always thought we were really good friends. When winter came,I knew she was cold in her house and couldn't afford to run any heaters. She was continually asking me to come around to her house so i could keep her warm. She would snuggle up to me for heat! Anyway one day i went round there was a wood chopper he had never seen me before. When I got inside Granny asked me to cuddle up to her. Suddenly the wood chopper knocked on the door. i was just putting the blanket on her when she slipped into my mouth witch was open. With shock of how cold she was. I ended up swallowing. The next thing i know, I woke up in the forest with a sore stomach!

The defensive story from the wolf from 'Little Red Riding Hood'

Hello i am Mr Wolf and i have got the real story. I will tell you what happened.

One day i was walking in the forest to visit my good friend Grandma. But when the house came into site I saw Grandma wheeling a large trolley of dangerous items into the house. I knew Grand ma had been crazy for a long time but I didn't think she would do this out of insanity. As I walked closer I heard her talking to herself. She said,"Little Red Riding hood is coming around this afternoon. That evil little girl will try to hurt me, I must set a trap to get her first!"

I had never met the girl but I knew she couldn't be that evil so I ran to warn her.
I found her on the track about half an hour away. I was trying to be nice so i wouldn't scare her but before I could warn her she hurried off!

I knew there was nothing I could do but stop Grandma myself. I did not mean to hurt her but to talk her out of setting the trap.

When I knocked on the no one answered so I was forced to enter without permission. But unfortunately before I could reason with her she ran at me with a knife. Instinctively I tried to protect myself but somehow Grandma got in the way of my mouth and I swallowed her.

I was horrified by what I had done but I had to search the house for more dangers.

I found gun powder in a night dress and cap so I put them on so I could take them away quickly easily. While I was searching the bed Little Red Riding Hood came in.
She thought I was Grandma and when I realised I jumped out of the bed to explain what had happened and why. But she got a fright.

A would cutter came running and immediately turned on me. Before I could explain myself I became unconscious. When I woke I was in the forest with a very sore stomach. I don't know what happened while I was unconscious.

I hope you see my point and can move on to see why Grandma was acting so strangely.

Hi To Everyone For Week 3!!

We have just come back from camp which was a totally fantastic experience. So this week with Ms Bouzaid we all wrote thank you letters to Mrs Parker for giving up her time to take us camp to Totaranui last week.

This week, there a large number students in the school have been making final preparations for stage challenge. This years topic is Home Grown. Good luck to our fabulous stage challenge team that are performing on Friday night at the Trafalgar Centre, hopefully we are going to win!.

On Monday we will have a new member to room 5.  Her name is Nikita and she likes dancing and sport, which is going to be cool as a lot of us in the class also enjoy these activities.

Bye Lizzie

Hey there Lizzie. The class are really gutted that they didn't get a chance to say goodbye to you.  We all wish you the best.  It's great that you've been watching our progress since you left....Do you have Skype?? Maybe we can Skype your class???

Back To School Again !

Well, we are all back, safe and sound.  I will get the kids to write up some new blogs about camp over the next week or so and get their thoughts on how the week went.  For me, well...apart from the lack of sleep on some nights it was great fun. Lots and lots of giggles each day and some absolutley CLASSIC one liners!!

Will just relay one conversation.......

On Wednesday night, the girls went out camping with myself and Debbie.  We had had a birthday party that evening for Kim as he turned 40 while we were away.  The kids all had streamers/horns etc and were pretty wild......Around 11p.m. Jodie was getting pretty fed up with the boys talking in their dorm.....

"Boys, keep it down, I am fed up now.  Any more noise and you will have to take your mattress off your bed and lay it outside my bedroom and sleep there for the night!"

Horn then gets blown by Keegan

"And any more horn blowing and you will also bring your mattress outside my bedroom!'

At this point, Dillon sits up on his bed and hands over his horn......

"Here, you'd better take this, I just can't help myself"

Oh me Oh my.....

CAMP IS NEARLY HERE!!!!

Term 2 has started already and Room 5 are very excited because on the 4th of May we are all going to Totarnui for our class camp for one week. We had to bring food donations to school which were cans of fruit and biscuits or home baking.

Some of the things we are doing on camp are long walks to Separation point, swimming and lots of activities like technology challenge, kayaking and lots more! The girls and the boys are going to camp out in a tent for one night each and will be cooking our own tea over the campfire. So basically we have to be responsible and do everything ourselves for one night.

Gear List

Just in case some of you are panicking, I've included a gear list on our blog...

Expressive Diary

Each week, our students are given the chance to 'express' themselves in their Expressive Diary. This is a book which allows their imagination to run wild. They are given either topics to write about or perhaps the first line will be given to them. Spelling, punctuation, grammar are not corrected in these books... we are simply looking the kids to get their ideas down on a page. Above are 2 which made it to our 'A1 Standards Table' this week, they are from Samara and Toma....

First Aid

All pupils underwent a 'People's First Aid Course' on the last Friday of Term 1. This is in preparation for when they go to camp in week 2 of Term 2. At least I know I will be in safe hands if something happens to me.....I have to say though, am not exactly sure about their bandaging skills!!???

wow museum

Last week was a fantastic week because we went to the wow museum to get ideas for stage challenge. Not only that but we got to see the classic car collections. We watched a fantastic movie of the WOW shows (world of wearable arts). On the way out of the museum, we went through a room where everything glowed. It was very cool and even our teeth glowed!

We were very lucky to go in for $1 each because children normally pay $7. We wold like to thank Miss Packer our art teacher for a great time.

'ME' Project

At the beginning of Term 1, I set room 5 the task of producing a project all about themselves. They had 9 stories to write and the topics to be covered included;

Lately I learned...
One thing I'd like you to know about me is...
The best present I ever received was...
The most dangerous thing I have ever done is...
If I could be anyone in the world it would be...
One goal I have for the future is...

Pupils were marked on grammar, spelling, A1 standards (neatness), inclusion of colour/photos as well as producing their project on time. They had 3 weeks to complete it and I must admit, the standard was VERY HIGH. I've included 3 pieces of work which I hope you enjoy reading

Week 6

Looks like we are flying through the first term! We are now in week 6 and we have our Class, Team and Sports Leaders! To get the position, the candidates had to make a speech. I have to say that they were all good and it was a tough choice! the results are.
Team Leader's, Ben Seelen and Rose McCarthey.
Class Leader, Kirsty Fern.
Deputy Class Leader, Lidi Saxon.
Sports Leader, Wati Nichols.
Deputy Sports Leader, Toma Nouguchi.

With Ms Bouzaid the class are learning about recounts. We had to write a recount and publish it. Mrs Parker is teaching us about hypothermia, exposure and the correct clothing to wear while we are in the bush. We need all this info as we are going on camp soon.

Well thats about it for Week 6. I wonder what were doing next week?!

our trip to tahunanui beach

Last week in room 5 we went as a house to Tahuanui beach. We started off going for a walk on the rock were Dillon McKay found some buried treasure (false teeth!).

Then we had lunch of sausages and what ever else was in our lunch boxes. After lunch we made sandscuptures out of sand.
The winners made a lizard and got some lollies and second place made a mermaid. After that we went swimming in the sea. Some boys had a sand fight and it hurt because there were stones in it.

The rest of the week was pretty uneventful. Some kids played bull rush which is a fun but very painful game!.

Team Day Out

On Wednesday, team Whakatu went to Tahuna Beach to get to know each other a little better! We had a great time looking in all the rock pools, swimming and making sand sculptures (some people found out rather quickly that making a sculpture so close to the water's edge is not such a great idea!)
