Swimming sports 09

Swimming Sports

On Friday the 27th of Febuary the awesome Broadgreen Intermediate School held the wicked swimming sports of 2009, YAY!

It was extremely colourful with people wearing the house colours, it was really loud because everybody was screaming and cheering people on. We tried a mexican wave but Isel stuffed it up!

The swimming sports is held every year in term 1, so everybody can compete twice.

Chocolate fundraiser

Broadgreen Intermediate has started the delicious chocolate fundraiser. Every student takes home either mint chip, top deck, caramello, caramello eggs, ordinary chocolate eggs, moro bars, snakes and dairy milk.

The money is going towards new equipment for the new hall. Awesome ae.

Tell your friends to go on the awesome Rm 5 blog!!!

Some very proud yr 7's showing off their money boxes...

Week 3

This week in room 5 we went swimming. We are training for the school Swimming Sports competition which will take place next Friday. We had to do as many lengths as we could. Then we got to go on the diving boards. There were lots of cool tricks taking place like back flips and Misty's. For P.E. we played Mrs Turners special that was fun.

We have been completing our self portraits but we are almost finished now. We have also been working on our 'ME' project. Its really hard but we doing well.

Chocolate fundraising is coming up soon and we can't wait! We picked which flavour of chocolate we would like. Joel picked Top Deck and Carmelo and Justine picked the same as Joel.

In tech the yr 7's have just finished making their money boxes and they look fantastic. The yr 8's are painting cat houses for the S.P.C.A. It is really good fun! Tomorrow we do not have to go to school as it is a teachers only day, Lucky us YAY! - Mrs Parker says BOO!

Creating Self Portraits

Our first game of capture the flag against room4 (and we won yay!!!)

First Full Week

In room 5 we have two cool teachers Mrs Parker and Ms Bouzaid . We're very lucky in room 5 because most classrooms only have one awesome teacher when in room 5 we have two! First thing on Monday morning the year eights took the year sevens on a tour of the school .They showed us how to get to different places and what each area is for. They also told us the names of the teachers of the classrooms ( even though we can't remember them all! )

Later on we played a game called 'Miss Turner's Special' which is a cross between softball and T-ball and it is played with a cricket bat.We spent quite a while playing this game because everyone enjoyed it.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays we do Technology rotations . This term the year sevens are doing hard tech (Woodwork) with Mr Swain and they will be making a money box which can hold two $5 coins. On Tuesday, he told us that whoever doesn't believe that he can show 2 $5 coins owes him an eskimo pie (but I'm not sure if he meant it or not!) The year eight's are doing art with Mrs Packer. They will be painting a mural in a specified area around the school.

What will we be teaching this term?????

Well, Term 1 will be a very busy time indeed. There are 2 major focuses this term, or what we refer to as 'Integrated Units' One of which is 'Me, Myself, and I'. This looks at relationships with other people. The kids will be learning to describe and demonstrate a range of assertive communication skills and processes that enable them to interact with other people. They will also identify the effects of changing situations, roles and responsibillities on relationships and describe appropriate responses.

The second focus will be 'Footprints In The Past' Room 5 will be focusing on the era of 1960. They will learn that people pass on and sustain culture and heritage for different reasons, and understand that this has consequences for people.

We will also begin our reading programme using fictional novels and journals. This will be the only area in which Renee and I follow on from each other, mainly as this is such a large area and we would rather split it up so that the kids are doing a 'little bit each day' rather than one full block each week.

Recount writing is another area that we will be looking heavily into. This will involve the kids writing in their expressive diaries, writing letters to their teacher as well as transactional writing on their friendships.

Renee has a strong background in Te Reo Maori and I have one in Science so we prefer teaching these specific subjects. These two areas will be carried on throughout the year rather than in one specific term

Thinking skills is an area that B.I.S. has a large focus on. What this means is that we teach the kids to learn in different ways. Some children learn easier through simply getting on with things and working problems out for themselves, while others need a stimulus to get them started. Everyone will be given the opportunity to try out various ways to challenge themselves with their thinking skills. In Term 1, we will be focusing on 'Multiple Intelligences and Bloom's'

As for Maths, each child will be tested within the first 3 weeks for their ability within this subject. The whole school will then be 'banded' and your child will have a specific teacher who will teach at their preferred level. They will not necessarily have Renee or myself.

There will be alot of opportunity for sport, fitness testing and learning different areas within ICT. You will find that this is a fast paced school but hopefully your child will gain so much from it.
